In 1954, The New Yorker published Adrienne Rich’s debut poem, “Living in Sin,” which was eventually published in The Diamond Cutters and Other Poems (1955). It shows a young woman “living in sin”—cohabitating with a man outside of marriage. She grows progressively unhappy as her idealized bohemian lifestyle gives way to a mundane daily existence. The poem is a sharp portrayal of romantic disappointment and a foreshadowing of the feminism.
