The poem can be interpreted in light of India’s tumultuous war for independence, during which three of the qualities stated by the poet in association with the Rowlatt Act of 1919 (truth, love, and peace) were broken, as well as incidents such as the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre, religious disputes, and revolutionary activities. This poem encourages Indians to forsake casteism, superstitions, and other societal ills that existed then and now in order to live in peace.
