The poem Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers depicts two contrasting things. First fearlessness, boldness and courage in the art (the tigers) and cowardliness, fear and failed life of the artist (Aunt Jennifer). The poet explains how Aunt Jennifer finds peace in her art and escapes from the harsh reality.

The harsh reality refers to her failed marriage in which her husband is dominating over her life. She does not seem to possess any rights or privileges. The “massive weight of Uncle’s wedding band” on her hand shows that she has no control over her life. She is subjected to ordeals and will have to bear them throughout her life.

When she carves the tigers on canvas, her fingers flutter like the wings of birds which show that she is terrified because of her husband. Thus the poem exposes the evils of patriarchal society.

But the poem gives the message of women emancipation and upliftment not by revolting against their husbands but by expressing themselves in art. Art is free unlike women’s married life. It is everlasting unlike humans life. And finally, it is a world in which women can escape and feel better.

In the poem, the tigers which Aunt Jennifer carves are totally different than her. They are bold, fearless, courageous and move in chivalrous way. On the other hand, Aunt Jennifer herself is a victim of failed marriage. Her husband controls her life. She always remain afraid. Her fingers tremble like birds flutter.

The poet says that, the ring of her marriage will remain on her fingers even after death. However her art (the tigers) will always remain bold and fearless.

Yes, Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers is definitely a tragic poem. It describes the condition of Aunt Jennifer who is a victim of male dominated society and failed marriage. Her fingers tremble as birds flutter. The psychological weight of Uncle’s wedding marriage band makes it difficult for her to work. She appeared to have been imprisoned in the trap of marriage.

Even, after her death, the ring will remain attached to her fingers which means she won’t be free even after her death. The only way of her escape from the harsh reality is her carved tigers which make her feel a little bit better.
