  1. The poem ” to India my native land” has been written by Henry Louis Vivian Derozio, the founder of the young Bengal movement that took an active part in the freedom struggle against the British. The poem reflects his love for India.

    The poet speak about the glory and the beauty of his country. The poet want to tell about the beautiful and wealthy past India had. The poet want to tell about the past in which the country was considered as a ‘golden bird’.

    The poem lament the fact that india has been enslaved by the British and he desires to bring back her glory.

    The poet sight my country i.e.india , the phrase depicts the poet’s lament over the sufferings of his country. According to him in it’s “days of glorious past” i.e. before the British, the country had a glorious past has a beautiful ‘Halo’ circled around her forehead and was worshipped as a diety. The poet also said that india was once worshipped as a God and had been praised for her glorious beauty and holiness in the past but now they glory and reverence is gone.

    The poet also mention that india has been compared to eagle which was once free but now it’s been chained down and crawling at lowly dust, rather than flying in the air.

    The poet desire to dive into the depths of time and bring back out the age which was once a glorious beauty but now the respect has been broken into a few small fragments which cannot be seen by the human eyes.

    Lastly the poet want his country back as a reward. Thus, the poem ends in hope for a better future of India.
