Indirect Speech: I asked the guard when the next train would come in.
Explanation: When the reporting verb is in the past (said) and the simple present tense is used as a future form, it becomes would + verb, not simple past tense.
And if the sentence is interrogative, we use the reporting verbs – asked, enquired, etc.
