It’s best to start by saying “hello”. Say it in a friendly manner, but don’t say it to just anyone. If you’re not really interested, you can either say that it was nice to meet them or ask them what they do. Saying “nice to meet you” is too informal for most situations; however, saying “hello” is too formal. Also, be sure to smile at the person as you do so, which will make them feel welcome and less awkward in the situation.
