Love is universal, and that applies for both humans and animals. In this story, the author tries to establish the fact that if humans and animals are able to love each other, the problem of living together in harmony won’t be a problem. One way of showing our love for the animals is by protecting them, not for commercial purposes but conservation. In the narrator’s zoo, he is always concerned about the well-being of all his animals. When N’pongo fell sick, the narrator could hardly focus on his life. He consulted vets and physicians and gave him the best medical aid possible and waited by his side till N’pongo got well. Though the narrator always seemed short on funds, he did his best on raising the money to bring N’pongo and Nandy to his zoo. He knew the government will not take care of animals, so he did his best to bring them to his home and look after them in his zoo. This type of love and affection is what the author hopes to inspire within the minds of the readers.
