The dealer announced the price of the baby male gorilla to be twelve thousand pounds. The narrator agreed to the amount but he was in distress as how would he collect such a huge amount. His friend, Hope, gave him an idea to call all the rich people in the island and ask them if they were to willing to donate money for a baby gorilla. The narrator started making all the phone calls and by lunchtime, managed to collect two-hundred pounds. He then called a certain Major Domo, who gave quite an enthusiastic response to the idea of acquiring a baby gorilla and agreed to donate a thousand pounds. After making such calls, the narrator was successful in raising twelve thousand pounds for the baby gorilla.

When he wanted to buy a mate for N’pongo, the same dealer told the narrator that the price had gone up since the last time. The narrator bought the female baby gorilla with the payment carried out in installment basis.
