The poem Fire and Ice is metaphorical as it has deep message hidden in the words. Some scientists believe that the earth will destroy one day because of fire (i.e. getting hotter). Some other scientists believe that it will be destroyed by chilly cold.
However the poet uses fire and ice as symbols of greed and hate respectively. According to him, the real fire is the greed of humans and the real ice is our hatred. These two ills of the society will destroy the humanity one day.
