The theme of poverty and hunger is sharply contrasted with the luxuries and wealth around the little girl. The poor little is having to sell matchsticks in barefoot to earn a living when people are busy celebrating New Year around her. She envisions a warm stove and roasted goose, unable to attain them in this life. She is un underprivileged child overlooked by the aristocratic society.
